“Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood. If you’re reading this because you think you might be one, my advice is: close this book right now. Believe whatever lie your mom or dad told you about your birth, and try to lead a normal life. Being a half-blood is dangerous. It’s scary. Most if the time, it gets you killed in painful, nasty ways.” The Lightening Thief (Percy Jackson and the Olympians)
I had my first taste of Rick Riordan's work over the summer when I read The Lightening Thief, the first book in the Percy Jackson Series. It had me completely hooked and I immediately had to get my hands on The Sea of Monsters, the second book in the series. Riordan has an aptitude for funny, fast-paced fantasy. He presents protagonists who are popular for Middle School students because not only are they heroes with super powers they are normal and relate-able, modern day kids.
Riordan began writing seriously when he was in 8th grade and his message to aspiring young authors is an important one: 'read a lot and believe in yourself'.
